# How to Manage Users for Vultr Managed Apache Kafka®

Vultr Managed Apache Kafka® user management feature allows customers to easily add or delete users from their Kafka instance and manage user permissions. This intuitive interface streamlines access control, enabling organizations to define roles and responsibilities for each user, ensuring secure and efficient collaboration. With flexible permission settings, tailoring the user experience to meet their operational needs while maintaining security protocols.

Follow this guide to manage users for Vultr Managed Apache Kafka® with Vultr Console, API, CLI, or Terraform.

=== "Vultr Console"

    1. Navigate to **Products** and select **Databases**.
    1. Select the target database.
    1. Navigate to **Topic & Users** to manage Users for Vultr Managed Apache Kafka®.
    1. Click **Add New User**.
    1. Provide values for **Username**, **Permissions**, and **Password**. 
    1. Click **Create New User**.

    1. List all the databases by sending a `GET` request to the [**List Managed Databases** endpoint](https://www.vultr.com/api/#tag/managed-databases/operation/list-databases) and note the target database's ID.

    1. Send a `POST` request to the [**Create Database User** endpoint](https://www.vultr.com/api/#tag/managed-databases/operation/create-database-user) to create a new user for your database.

            -X POST \
            -H "Authorization: Bearer ${VULTR_API_KEY}" \

        ```
    
    1. Send a `GET` request to the [**List Database Users** endpoint](https://www.vultr.com/api/#tag/managed-databases/operation/list-database-users) to list all the users.

        ```console
        $ curl "https://api.vultr.com/v2/databases/<database-id>/users" \
            -X GET \
            -H "Authorization: Bearer ${VULTR_API_KEY}"
        ```

    1. Send a `DELETE` request to [**Delete Database User** endpoint](https://www.vultr.com/api/#tag/managed-databases/operation/update-database-user)

        ```console
        $ curl "https://api.vultr.com/v2/databases/{database-id}/users/{username}" \
            -X DELETE \
            -H "Authorization: Bearer ${VULTR_API_KEY}"
        ```

    1. List all databases and note the target database's ID.

        ```console
        $ vultr-cli database list --summarize
        ```

    1. List all the users.

        ```console
        $ vultr-cli database user list <database-id>
        ```

    1. Delete a user.

        ```console
        $ vultr-cli database user delete <database-id> <user-name>
        ```
    
        Run `vultr-cli database update --help` to view all options.

    1. Ensure the [Vultr Terraform provider](https://registry.terraform.io/providers/vultr/vultr/latest/docs) is configured.

    1. Create a Kafka user with Terraform.

        ```terraform
        terraform {
            required_providers {
                vultr = {
                    source  = "vultr/vultr"
                    version = "~> 2.26"
                }
            }
        }

        provider "vultr" {}

        # Existing database assumed
        variable "database_id" { type = string }

        resource "vultr_database_user" "kafka_user" {
            database_id = var.database_id
            username    = "user1"
            password    = "p@ssWord123#"
            permission = "readwrite"
        }
        ```

    1. To delete the user, remove the resource block or run:

        ```console
        $ terraform destroy -target vultr_database_user.kafka_user
        ```
