Can I Make My Vultr Compute Instance Smaller?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

Compute instances cannot be downsized to smaller plans due to potential data loss risks when reducing allocated disk space.

No, Vultr Compute instances cannot be resized to a smaller plan. Downgrading is not supported because it involves reducing the attached disk size, which can lead to data loss or corruption. The disk space allocated to an instance cannot be safely decreased once provisioned.

If you want to reduce the size of an attached Block Storage volume, refer to Shrink a Block Storage Volume for a safe resizing procedure.

If you need a smaller plan, you can:

  • Provision a smaller instance and migrate your data using tools like rsync or scp.
