How Do I Manually Back Up My Vultr Compute Instance?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

A guide on manually backing up Vultr Compute instances through various methods to protect your data.

There are multiple ways to manually back up a Vultr Compute instance, depending on whether you want to capture the full disk image or back up specific data:

  • Snapshots: Use Vultr Snapshots to create an on-demand full disk image of your instance. This method is useful for capturing the complete system state, including configuration and data.

  • Rsync with Block Storage: Set up a scheduled or manual backup using rsync and Vultr Block Storage to back up specific files or directories to external volumes.

  • 3-2-1 Backup Strategy: Follow Vultr's 3-2-1 backup strategy to ensure redundancy. This method involves keeping multiple copies of your data across different storage types and locations for maximum reliability.
