How to Delete or Retrieve Data on Vultr?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

A guide explaining methods for securely retrieving or permanently deleting data from your Vultr infrastructure using platform-supported tools.

Vultr provides several platform-supported methods to retrieve or remove data from your infrastructure, depending on the operating system and services in use. For Linux, BSD, and similar environments, tools like sftp and rsync are readily available to securely transfer or purge files from Cloud Compute, Bare Metal instances, and Block Storage volumes. Windows-based instances support file transfers over Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

In cases where the instance cannot boot, you can mount a Live ISO from the Public ISO Library or upload a custom recovery image to extract data using standard tools. Block Storage volumes may also be detached from one instance and re-attached to another for manual recovery via mount operations.

Vultr Snapshots and Automatic Backups allow you to recover data by deploying the backup or snapshot to a temporary instance. Once deployed, you can access the filesystem and transfer data using standard file tools.

For full instructions on these methods, refer to the Vultr Data Portability Guide.

If you need to permanently remove your data and close your account, you can do so from the Vultr Customer Portal, or contact support to request data deletion in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
