Can I Upload an ISO File From My Local Computer to Vultr?

Updated on 20 November, 2025

Vultr allows ISO uploads by providing a URL from a publicly accessible server rather than direct local uploads.

Yes. While you cannot directly upload an ISO file from your local computer to Vultr, you can make the file available by first hosting it on a publicly accessible server. For example, you can upload the ISO to an HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP server and then provide the absolute URL to Vultr. Once the upload completes, the ISO will appear in your ISOs list, where you can use it to deploy new instances or attach it to existing ones.

ISO Upload Requirements

When preparing your ISO for upload, ensure it meets the following conditions:

  • The file size must be 10 GB or smaller.
  • The filename must end with the .iso extension.
  • The URL must be an absolute path without authentication tokens or query parameters.
  • Each account can store up to two ISO images at a time. If needed, you can delete existing ISOs to free up space.
  • Windows ISOs are not supported.
Important
After completing the operating system installation, detach the Custom ISO from the instance. If the ISO remains attached, the instance will continue to boot from it on subsequent restarts, preventing the installed operating system from loading properly.

This provides flexibility when you need to deploy operating systems, recovery tools, or utilities not included in Vultr’s public ISO library.
