How Are Bandwidth Caps Calculated?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

Explains how Vultr calculates bandwidth usage limits for customer accounts

Bandwidth caps are determined by combining the following allocations:

  • Free Bandwidth: Vultr provides 2 TB of free bandwidth per account, allocated monthly. This allocation resets at the beginning of each calendar month and does not carry over.

  • Instance Bandwidth: Each running instance contributes bandwidth based on its monthly cap, allocated hourly. For billing purposes, each month is treated as 672 hours. As long as the instance is running, it accrues a proportional share of its monthly bandwidth cap each hour.

An overage fee is applied if the total outbound data transfer exceeds the currently allocated bandwidth at any time during the month. For details on monitoring usage and overage rates, visit the Bandwidth Usage page in the Vultr Customer Portal.
