What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an extra security layer to your Vultr account by requiring a second verification method beyond your password during login.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an added layer of security for your Vultr account. When enabled, it requires you to provide a second form of verification, beyond your password, during the login process. This additional step reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if your primary credentials are compromised.

Vultr supports the following 2FA methods:

  • Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) applications, such as Google Authenticator.
  • Hardware security keys that support FIDO2/WebAuthn, such as YubiKey.
Note
Authy was previously supported but is no longer compatible with Vultr 2FA.

To maintain access in case you lose your 2FA device, it's strongly recommended to generate Emergency Backup Codes in advance and store them securely. These single-use codes serve as a fallback login method.

For guidance on configuring 2FA and generating backup codes, see the Vultr Two-Factor Authentication Guide and the Vultr Emergency Backup Codes Setup Guide.

Warning
If you lose access to both your 2FA method and backup codes, you’ll need to contact Vultr Support and verify your identity to recover access.
