What Type of Load Balancing Does Vultr Offer?

Updated on 18 December, 2025

offers both Layer 4 (Transport) and Layer 7 (Application) load balancing to distribute traffic across backend instances.

Vultr Load Balancers operate at both Layer 4 (Transport Layer) and Layer 7 (Application Layer), giving you flexibility in how traffic is distributed to your backend instances.

  • Layer 4 (TCP): Routes traffic based on IP address and port, making it efficient for general-purpose workloads such as databases, game servers, and custom TCP applications.
  • Layer 7 (HTTP/HTTPS): Provides application-aware routing by inspecting HTTP/HTTPS requests, enabling path-based routing, host-based rules, SSL termination, and intelligent request distribution.

By supporting both transport-level and application-level balancing, Vultr Load Balancers can handle everything from raw TCP traffic to complex web applications, ensuring optimal performance and availability for a wide range of use cases.
