Can I Undo Restoring a Vultr Compute Instance From a Backup?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

No, restoring a Vultr Compute instance from a backup cannot be undone as it permanently overwrites the disk data.

No, you cannot undo a restore operation once a Vultr Compute instance has been restored from a backup. The restore process overwrites the instance's disk, and any data that was present prior to the restore is permanently lost.

If you created a snapshot of the instance before restoring from the backup, you can revert to that snapshot to recover the previous state.

Otherwise, recovery would require manually restoring files from your own local or external backups.

To safeguard important data, we recommend using Vultr Block Storage or Vultr Object Storage as a persistent backup solution. These services allow you to securely store critical files independent of the instance lifecycle.
