Why Can't I Use Older Versions of Linux on a Vultr Instance?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

Explains why Vultr restricts deployment of outdated Linux distributions due to security and reliability concerns

Using outdated Linux distributions poses serious security and reliability risks. For this reason, Vultr does not support deploying older or deprecated Linux versions through the standard deployment interface.

Risks of Using Outdated Operating Systems

Running end-of-life (EOL) Linux distributions can expose your instance to:

  • Critical security vulnerabilities
  • Website defacement and malware infections
  • Excessive bandwidth usage
  • Irreversible data loss
  • Downtime and service disruptions
  • Financial losses from mitigation and recovery
  • Loss of customer trust and reputation damage

To protect your infrastructure and the platform ecosystem, Vultr restricts access to outdated operating system images.

Alternatives and Workarounds

If you need to run an older version of Linux for legacy software or data migration, you can upload a Custom ISO to install the operating system manually. This approach offers flexibility, but note that Vultr Support may not assist with issues related to custom images or unsupported operating systems, including recovery scenarios. For more details, refer to our Custom ISO provisioning guide.
