How Do I Create a Vultr Compute Instance Without a Private IP?

Updated on 15 September, 2025

Learn to create a Vultr Compute Instance Without a Private IP

By default, Vultr Compute instances do not have a private IP unless you explicitly attach them to a VPC Network during provisioning or manually connect them afterward.

To ensure an instance does not have a private IP:

  • During provisioning: Do not select any VPC Network under the "Additional Features" section.
  • After provisioning: You can detach the instance from a VPC to remove the assigned private IP.

Follow the steps below, to detach an instance from a VPC Network:

  1. Log in to the Vultr Customer Portal.
  2. Navigate to Products > Compute and select your instance.
  3. Go to the Settings tab.
  4. Click the VPC Networks section to view attached VPCs.
  5. Click the trash Bin icon next to the VPC description, then confirm by clicking Detach VPC.
Note
Detaching a VPC restarts your instance to complete the removal process. Plan accordingly to avoid disruption.
